is taking place in newtown, connecticut. this is at newtown high school. hundreds are in attendance including president obama. he is expected to speak shortly. cbs will carry the president's remarks live as they happen. >>> chilling new details about -- are emerging about the deadly rampage in connecticut that left 28 people dead including 20 children. sources say the shooter, adam lanza, shot his mother four times in the head, apparently as she lay sleeping. computers in the home were found smashed. lanza then drove it to the school and forced his way in by shooting out a window. within minutes he shot and killed the children and six adults, and then as police closed in, lanza shot himself. in newtown, it was a day to mourn their dead at church services. cbs is in newtown where president obama is among the mourners. >> reporter: hundreds of mourners at a vigil in new town gave first respond ears standing ovation. president obama is there to help this community deal with the tragedy. people have been stopping at town memorials all day. while others attended sunday services focused o

of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you

in america, aurora, orego in the shopping mall and now here in newtown have involved young people using the same and now here, newtown, all involved young people using the same weapon. an ar-15 semiautomatic rifle all with high capacity magazines. in aurora, over 100 in his magazine which he could fire off. here we saw up to 30. here's the question. why do you feel that americans should have those if your belief is they just have to defend themselves? >> well, before i go any further, piers, first, thanks for having me back. we did have a heated discussion last time and i much appreciate this more calm discussion. second, on behalf of i'm sure i speak for the entire board of michigan coalition of responsible gun owners we offer our sincere condolence and sympathies for the victims and their families. we are all about safety. we all want to be safe and we certainly want children to be safe. like i said last week, we just disagree on how to get there from here. to answer your question, i would point out that the shooter in the mall in oregon was confronted by a legally armed citizen who

for their families. the news, coming as the community of newtown begins to mourn, the 26 victims who did not survive on friday t was an emotional memorial ceremony at newtown high school last night. president obama, sitting among the mourners, in the high school, joining community and religious leaders at the service. first though he met privately with each of the families of the victims. what, what an experience that must have been. and you could see, that he was visibly moved when he came out of on the stage and the entire nation has been moved by the events in -- newtown connecticut, 72 hours ago. sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely, perhaps a month or perhaps permanently as the investigation continues and as they learn more about the gunman, adam lanza, what may have motivated this terrible unspeakable crime. rick leventhal joins us live from newtown with the latest on that investigation. rick? >> reporter: megyn, you may have heard paul vance say there were moving vans, collecting furniture of the classroom other equipment from the school so it can be moved to another school,

. instead of flowers, her family is requesting donations be made to the newtown animal shelter, that's probably what she would have wanted. we will remember her. we will remember 7-year-old chase kowalski, for his love of outdoor sports and his talent for them. he just won his first mini-triathlon. he was always outside riding his bike. we will remember chase. we will remember 6-year-old jesse lewis was learning how to ride a horse. it was only natural, his family had five of them. two miniatures, three dogs, a flock of chickens. he loved to tell stories and lived life brave and true. we will remember. we'll also remember 6-year-old james. he's being remembered as a sweetheart of a kid with such an innocent face. a face that we and they and everyone should remember. we'll remember the face of 7-year-old grace mcdonnell. the neighbor describes it as the face of an angel. she was her mother's little best friend. her family in a brief statement saying, our daughter grace was the love and light of our family. words cannot adequately express our sense of loss. we too will remember grace.
